Essay #4 - Free Write

Now that you have reviewed the essay #4 prompt (your final exam), take a moment to free write on how you will complete the assignment in a comment to this post.  Option #1 - LITERACY NARRATIVE, Option #2 - FILM ANALYSIS

LITERACY NARRATIVE

If you plan on completing the literacy narrative, write down some discourse communities you are a part of and list some of the issues, jargon, and experiences from each discourse community. Which discourse community do you think will yield the best essay for you?

How do you exchange ideas in your discourse community? What ideas and methods are valued? How would you explain your discourse community to someone who knows little or nothing about it?

FILM ANALYSIS

How do you plan to complete the film analysis option for essay #4? What compositional modes of film making within Dr. Strangelove or Pan's Labyrinth will you consider in your analysis? What scenes or characters will you focus on? How will you use the critical essays?

What kinds of symbolism are you planning to discuss in the film you are analyzing? How is Jeff Lebowski depicted here with the toilet? What similarities are there? What does this imply?

  1. The discourse community that I am planning on focusing on is kickboxing. I think that the jargon for a group fitness class will be a good thing to talk about. I can also talk about the class lay out, what is expected out of me as a teacher and the actions I have to talk to ensure the safety of my class. I can also speak on my experiences in getting the job.

  2. My first instinct is to interview any one of several friends I know who are deeply vested in the world of gaming. To be more precise, the world of pencil and paper roleplaying. It's a whole society of which I am well accquainted but certainly no expert. Still, I feel that I could enjoy writing an (at least partially) objective essay about it for the project with regards to gaming, favorite dice, etc. I would probably interview my best friend Daniel Holland, who also happens to be an enormous gaming fan and player.

  3. The discourse community that I am going to write about is aviation. The is a lot of jargon in the aviation industry such as the phonetic alphabet and radio calls. Pilots communicate with each other and the tower while in flight by making radio calls which involve the phonetic alphabet and many other forms are jargon. I am going to start off by defining some simple terms and jargon to my audience. I plan on interviewing one of my friends who is in the aviation program here.

  4. My idea for the literacy narrative is to write about my high school. I had an unusual, however fortunate high school experience. My "experiential learning" program focused on responsibility, the students' interests and future plans, as well as creating a sense of community. I could interview one of my teachers or fellow students. "Jargon" I would need to define would include Town Meeting, Walkabout, and Interim. Seeing as I am one of the few people whom came to college having enjoyed their high school experience, I believe that it is an experience worth writing about.

  5. I am interested in doing the literacy narrative. I would like my discourse community to be about where I work; Appalachian Behavioral HealthCare. I work in the Active Treatment department. At ABH we over come a lot of issues and everyday face problems. One issue we deal with is deciding which patients can partake in which activity for the day. Each patient has a different level that they have received from either the court or the hospital, and activities require different levels, high or low. We also have to think of new and inventive activities so that patients are not bored doing the same thing everyday. ABH is also the only hospital in the state of Ohio that allows patients to experience community trips (trips in which patients are allowed to leave the hospital with AT staff and go to different places in the community). There is a lot of jargon and issues to explain for ABH.

  6. I'm a part of the discourse communities of journalism and musicians/guitarists. I'm planning on doing my literacy narrative on the DC surrounding journalism, because there is a lot of jargon and I know a lot of people that are also in that DC I could consult. A lot of jargon and words come from journalism, such as the term "stereotype". The media has to struggle every day in order to find out which stories are most valuable to the community they serve, as well as balancing out their commercial interests as well.
I plan on interviewing my girlfriend as my main source, as she was both The Post's writer and columnist of the year. In explaining the DC I want to use examples from actual news sources such as The New York Times or the Washington Post to strengthen the examples I use.

  7. I think I am planning on doing the film analysis. The compositional modes that I plan on using in my essay are lighting, mise en scene, and editing. The characters that I might focus on are Mercedes, Captain Vidal, and Ofelia. I am not for sure on the scenes that I will use yet. I will use the critical essays to help develop my paper and the symbology between the characters and other films etc.

  8. I am part of a couple different discourse communities, I'm a member of a fraternity and a union. However, the discourse community I was in while I as at boarding school stands out. There is a definite jargon to the a boarding schools, terms like "workjob". Although most member do have the same general concerns of most high school kids there are some very unique situations that occur at a prep school.

  9. I am member of different discourse communities, although I wanted to maybe try different ones. I was either thinking maybe doing the rock climbing community. I have a couple of friends who are involved in the community. Although I was also thinking I might try the marijuana community and how students feel about the community on campus.
