Welcome to English 308J, Summer Intersession I


The above picture demonstrates critical thinking because it represents the world from various perspectives. In your comment, briefly state what critical thinking means to you and give an example of how it is applied.

Also, free write a bit about possible topics for essays #1 and #2. Give at least two topics for each essay.

  2. Critical thinking to me is like walking in someone else shoes. Trying to see different perspectives and apply them to a topic. Reasoning, posing questions, and giving opinions about something.

    #1. marine life being affected by oil spills.
    -food industry
    #2-puppy mills
    -obesity rates

  3. To me critical thinking is almost like brain storming. You have to sort of think outside the box. To apply critical thinking its best to make a list or some sort of organization on paper. And just write down everything that comes to you even if it is stupid. Then come back later and weed out what you want and don't want.

    my topic for essay #1 is about the Joran van der Sloot case.

  4. I believe critical thinking is about being open minded. It is thinking outside the box, and expanding ones thoughts on different concepts. Being open to and interpreting different viewpoints and opinions.

    My topic for essay one is whether it is okay to reject blood donations from homosexuals.

    My topic ideas for essay two are the influence of media on recreation and childhood obesity compared with socioeconomic status.

  5. Critical thinking involves asking the questions that aren't so easy to answer and looking at a topic from more than one perspective with an unbiased open mind.

    An idea for essay 1 that I had is the rise of human trafficking in the past decade.

  7. Sorry I absolutely missed this blog. Anyway, to me critical thinking means... well, not to sound like a smart ass but it means thinking critically. It means taking time to really examine and think about what is being said or argued, regardless of one's personal opinions or view points. It involves accepting that the fact that there may not be any easy answers, if there are any answers at all.

    Also, since I have already picked my topic for essay 1, the idea of speculating about a topic may be academic. However, for my second essay, I'm tempted to play around with the idea of freedom of religion, to the extent that I wish to discuss the different ways that this freedom has been abused.

  8. To think critically means to take into consideration all ideas and viewpoints on a subject or idea and organize on your own what you believe the outcome or "truth" to be.

    my idea for #1 has to do with how Down syndrome can now be detected prenatally and what that means for the future, in regard to social standards.
    My idea for #2 might be building off of my first subject.

  9. To think critically means the to think "outside the box", allowing numerous of perspectives to capture your attention. Often it requires an analysis of several viewpoints which some may not be apparent to you.
    For my #1 essay, it has to do with the high rates of executions in Texas compared to other states in the nation. #2 essay will probably be similar to the first in focusing on the rights of the wrongfully convicted and their exoneration.

  10. To me, thinking critically means looking at a subject from every different angle imaginable. In some ways it is stepping out of your own mind and reacting to situations through a different perspective.

  11. Critical thinking means being able to see every angle of a situation, from the many perspectives from people who are effected directly or indirectly.

  12. I think critical thinking is supposed to engage the reader in whatever you are writing about. giving them a new perspective on something or opening their mind or making them aware of different aspects of how people look at things.

    Essay 1- Coal
    Essay 2- Mountain Top Removal(building from essay #1) or Oil spill and its affect on marine organisms

  13. For me critical thinking goes beyond simple observation and into real comprehension and evaluation.

    essay 1: repercussions of Israeli surmise attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.
    essay 2: positive potential of nuclear fusion for power production.
